Xi Jinping to Chair China-Central Asia Summit

On May 8, CCTV News announced that the China-Central Asia Summit will be held in Xi’an, Shanxi Province from May 18 to 19. President Xi Jinping will host the summit, the first major home diplomatic event hosted by China this year.

Head of state diplomacy

The China-Central Asia Summit is the first time since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Central Asian countries in the past 31 years that the heads of state of the six countries have held a summit in a physical form. It is a milestone in the history of the development of relations between China and Central Asian countries.

On May 8, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin introduced relevant arrangements for the summit at a regular press conference upon inquiry:

The heads of state will review the development of China-Central Asia relations, and exchange views on China-Central Asia cooperation in various fields and major international and regional issues of common concern. The heads of state will jointly sign important political documents.

Presidents of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan will pay state visits to China upon invitation.

“I believe that with the joint efforts of all parties, this summit will draw a new blueprint for China-Central Asia relations and usher in a new era of bilateral cooperation.”
——Wang Wenbin

China-Central Asia Community of Shared Future has attracted much attention from the outside world.

  • On March 24 this year, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Qin Gang wrote the article “Hold High the Banner of a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind and Build a Better World Together” in the People’s Daily. Over the past ten years, the practice of building a community with a shared future for mankind has made great strides, from bilateral to multilateral, from regional to global, and has achieved fruitful results. “At the regional level, the China-ASEAN and China-Central Asia Community of Shared Future have taken the lead in the surrounding area and achieved remarkable results.”
  • On April 26, Qin Gang met with Kazakhstan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Nurtlieu, Kyrgyzstan’s Foreign Minister Kurubayev, and Tajikistan’s Foreign Minister Mukhri in Xi’an. Ding, Foreign Minister Saidov of Uzbekistan, and First Deputy Foreign Minister Hajiyev of Turkmenistan held talks.
  • On April 27, Qin Gang presided over the fourth China-Central Asia Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Xi’an. The meeting was presided over by Qin Gang and attended by foreign ministers of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. The most important political achievement of this meeting is to make comprehensive political preparations for the upcoming China-Central Asia Summit.

China and Central Asian countries are friendly neighbors and comprehensive strategic partners

Central Asia Summit

Wang Wenbin said that China is willing to work with Central Asian countries to take the above-mentioned visit as an opportunity to further expand all-round cooperation, push mutual relations to a new level, and contribute to regional and world peace, stability, development and prosperity.

On the one hand, economic cooperation

Under the strategic guidance of the heads of state’s diplomacy, the pragmatic cooperation between China and the five Central Asian countries has achieved fruitful results, achieving “full coverage” of cooperation documents for the joint construction of the “Belt and Road” and medium- and long-term economic and trade cooperation plans.

In 2022, the trade volume between China and the five Central Asian countries will reach US$70.2 billion, a record high.

By the end of 2022, the stock of China’s direct investment in the five Central Asian countries will be nearly US$15 billion. We have jointly implemented a number of cooperation projects in the fields of oil and gas mining, processing and manufacturing, interconnection and digital technology, which have brought tangible benefits to the people of all countries.

On April 18 this year, the first meeting of economic and trade ministers of the “China-Five Central Asian Countries” was held.

During the meeting, the economic and trade ministers of the six countries jointly agreed to sign relevant outcome documents during the China-Central Asia Summit, and unanimously agreed to hold the “Central Asia Cloud Products Gathering” e-commerce event to introduce more famous and special products from Central Asia to Chinese consumers.

Another aspect is cooperation in international and regional affairs

In the diplomatic activities between China and Central Asian countries, the heads of state often exchange views on major regional and international issues, and actively support each other’s important diplomatic initiatives.

On April 27, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Qin Gang presided over the fourth China-Central Asia Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Xi’an.

When briefing reporters about the situation after the meeting, Qin Gang said that all parties believe that the complex and changing situation in Central Asia has brought new challenges to the development and stability of the six countries. The six countries are determined to step up the fight against the “three evil forces”, illegal drug trafficking, transnational organized crime and cyber crime, strengthen communication and cooperation on the Afghan issue, and jointly maintain peace and tranquility in the region. No one or any force will be allowed to create chaos and turmoil in Central Asia.
